The Breed

Appearance of Sungold Goldens

We are often ask what type of Golden we want in appearance, size, weight, etc. We like a medium size dog as the AKC standard dictates. Our males are usually 65-75 pounds, females are about 50-65 lbs. Males average 23-24” at the shoulder, females 22-23”. Our dogs have good bone, deep chest, are short coupled, with an athletic build. We like a pleasing head of medium size. We don’t like the big, blocky type heads with a straight stop and short muzzle (can’t pick up a bird), with a “domed” shape skull, nor the heads which give the dog the look of forever being a juvenile. We do not want an overly large dog for several reasons, the main one is that our Goldens are used for hunting. Asking a 95 pound dog to hunt pheasants all day is like asking a Sumo wrestler to run a marathon. Big dogs also are more prone to skeletal, ligament and muscle problems.

We do not like the small, narrow chested, “pencil” headed Goldens seen in some of the present day field bred dogs. Our goal is to stay in the middle, with a good looking, athletic dog with a pleasing head and expression that is built to hunt all day. As far as color, we believe that a good dog is NEVER a bad color. We breed for natural field characteristics, natural ability and trainability, not color. We have Goldens which are blond, honey, taffy, or even a rich red color. Most of our dogs have a medium length thick coat, with some wave, or straight. Occasionally we have curly coats, though the curly coated dogs are uncommon. Some people actually prefer the curlier coat, as they do seem to shed water better. The dogs pictured in this pamphlet are very representative of what our Sungold Goldens look like.
